Fetal Ultrasound in Gurgaon

What is Fetal ultrasound?

Fetal Ultrasound, also referred to as Sonogram, is a prenatal ultrasound that creates an image of the baby in the uterus of the to-be mother. During a Fetal ultrasound, the head, heart, and spine of the unborn baby are evaluated along with other body parts. This test may be performed either on the abdomen of the to-be mother (transabdominal) or in the vagina (transvaginal).

Uses of a Fetal ultrasound

  • To find out multiple embryos in the women

  • Developmental defects in the baby

  • To evaluate the gestational age of the baby and what would be the ideal body area to place the needle while removing amniotic fluid (amniocentesis)

  • To detect any birth abnormalities and assist the doctor to manage the pregnancy easily in case of a genetic defect.

This ultrasound is usually performed during the first trimester and then again in the second trimester of the pregnancy. A Fetal ultrasound may be performed routinely to keep monitoring the health of the baby.

Why is a Fetal growth scan needed?

Some of the common reasons for a Fetal growth scan in pregnancy include:

  • Previous pregnancy complications.

  • High blood pressure or maternal diabetes.

  • The abdomen of the to-be mother seems smaller or larger than expected.

How do you get ready for Fetal ultrasound?

A Fetal ultrasound is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients are asked to remove objects such as jewellery during the procedure.

  • Transabdominal Ultrasound: The patient will be asked to raise her upper body clothing slightly to expose the abdomen. The patient will be asked to lie down on the examination table, either on her side or the back. A clear gel will be applied on the abdomen and the transducer will be moved over the area and then it will be pressed against the skin.

  • Transvaginal Ultrasound: The patient will be asked to remove her clothing from the waist down and a sheet will be provided to place her legs. The patient will be asked to lie down on her back. Her knees will be apart and the feet will be in stirrups. A lubricant will be applied on the vaginal transducer probe covered with a sterile cover. Thereafter, the doctor will insert the probe into the vagina and move it to capture a series of images. Then, the probe will be removed.

What happens during a Fetal growth scan?

The patient will be asked to sign a consent form that gives permission for the procedure. The to-be mother will be asked to consume several glasses of water so clearer images can be accessed.

During a Fetal growth scan, various measurements of the fetus are taken and plotted on a growth chart. This depends on the gestational age of the baby as per the number of weeks of pregnancy at the time of the Fetal growth scan.

The primary Fetal measurements for a Fetal growth scan includes:

  • Biparietal diameter (BPD) – measures across the head.

  • Head Circumference (HC) – measures around the head.

  • Abdominal Circumference (AC) – measures around the abdomen.

  • Femur Length (FL) – measures the length of the thigh bone.

Are there any risks to the test?

Some patients may experience mild discomfort from the transducer being moved or placed on the abdomen (transabdominal ultrasound) or in the vagina (transvaginal ultrasound). Patients with a latex allergy may experience a reaction to the transducer’s latex covering.

What do the results mean?

Generally, a Fetal growth scan provides reassurance that the unborn baby is growing and developing naturally and normally.

The Fetal scan ultrasound will provide results about:

  • The location of the foetus.

  • Number of babies.

  • Detailed examination and evaluation of the baby’s arms, legs, abdomen, heart, kidneys, placenta location, urinary bladder, umbilical cord, head, brain, neck, and spine.

  • Weight of the foetus.

  • Any abnormality or genetic defects.

  • Identify the exact gestational age of the unborn baby.
